George Washington House (as it is known today) went on to become a residence for officer’s within the Garrison including the Commander of the Royal Engineers. After the withdrawal of the British forces in 1905, it returned to private ownership until it was eventually restored by the Government of Barbados and opened to the public in 2007.
You can stroll through the house where, downstairs, it has been restored to the time of George Washington’s visit and then, upstairs, where you can experience the modern museum exhibits in air conditioned comfort. There is also a small cinematic theatre on site were a short film on George Washington’s visit to Barbados can be seen.
The Coffee Barbados Café , located in the old 1830’s stable building, is one of the finest on the island, serving breakfast, lunch, cakes, tea, coffee and more! The Café is freely accessible to all (whether visiting the House or not) and has a wonderful view of the gardens.
Last, but not least, the Garrison Tunnels can only be experienced from George Washington House, so you have plenty to choose from!
